South, beyond the grip of civilization, there is a wave. It breaks like a locomotive across a somber sand beach next to a dark, rocky point. A few surfers are drawn to surf it; fewer still tell its story; none ignore its malevolence on a big day. A cruel wave which rewards the devoted with peaks and bowls that are as much rush as ride. Some say it's the shallow bottom, which drops away like deadly wet stone as the wave pitches out. Some claim the power stems from an unfathomed chasm just beyond the beach. Others declare it is the icy currents that suck, tow and spin the unwary as the waves grind up against the point. Those who know whisper the truth behind the moan in the wind and the lingering mist from the breakers on the rocks. Grown men have died there in the surf. The swells have taken their bodies and not returned them to the beach. It's a place of reverence on a murky, grey day. A place called Deadmans. P.S. Dos Olas Co. sells surf wear (mostly t-shirts and hoodie sweatshirts) featuring some of our surf art. DEADMANS brand t-shirts and sweatshirts are high-quality and silk-screened. Check it out at our TIENDA (that's Spanish for "store" folks). Dos Olas also cares for a wild environment (both indoors and out, and particularly in Baja California, Mexico) so that surfing and camping, whether in Baja, or some other camp and surf zone, stays wild. Keep it wild and pray for surf. |
